End-of-Summer Prep: How to Get Your Patio Ready for Fall Gatherings

With the summer season coming to an end, many people jump directly into fall cleaning. During this decluttering and cleanup, people tend to forget about their patio, which is a major part of the home’s outdoor area. A little end-of-summer prep can help transform this outdoor space into a cozy space for hosting friends or simply relaxing with family. Here’s how you can get started.

1. Clean, Inspect & Declutter

Start by thoroughly cleaning your patio, sweeping away leaves, dust, and debris. By pressure washing or scrubbing with warm, soapy water, you can get your patio back in good shape. Once cleaned, carefully check the surfaces and furniture. See if there are any signs of cracks in paving or any loose boards and fix these issues early on to prevent winter damage. Remove summer-only items, such as pool toys or any unused decorative accessories and store them away properly.

2. Revive and Replace Plants

Check your potted plants and remove any that may have dried up or gotten damaged during the summer season. You can instead plant fall-friendly blooms, such as asters and pansies, to bring more color to your outdoor space. Planting some late-blooming perennials can help add to the beauty of your patio during the autumn season.

3. Swap Textiles and Decor

Replace bright summer fabrics and cushions with deeper earthy tones such as rusty orange, burgundy, mustard and forest greens. Adding heavier textures like cozy fleece rugs and wool throws can help create a warmer outdoor space. You can also incorporate some seasonal décor such as pumpkins, rustic wooden crates, wreaths, etc.

4. Set the Mood with Lighting

When days become shorter and nights longer, lighting becomes essential. Adding string lights, LED lights, or lanterns can make your patio more well-lit. By including a fire pit, you can make the space warmer and more ambient as well. These heat sources can enable you to enjoy your evenings more comfortably.

5. Furnish for Flexibility

Rearrange the patio furniture to encourage conversation. You can set seating in clusters, place chairs around fire pits and leave space for guests to move comfortably. Adding ottomans or extra seating that convert to a storage space can be useful for storing blankets and cushions as well.

6. Maintain Safety and Structural Soundness

Ensure your patio has proper drainage, as water pooling can cause damage over time. By creating a slight slope away from the house and keeping gutters and downspouts clear, you can prevent water pooling. Check the roof of your patio and any other surrounding structures like railings and overhangs, carefully. Get cracks, gaps, or damages fixed promptly before the wetter season makes repairs difficult.
